This whaling village (47 km away from Lewoleba town) on south coast of Lembata still hunts whales using small boats (pledang baoth), with the aded it drama of a harpooner who leaps from the baot in to the beach of the whale and plungs his harpoon deep in to the victime flesh. Most of those caught are sperm whales though occasionally smaller pilot whales are scace sharkes, mantarays and dolphins.

The villagers of Lamalera mainly use harpoons for fishing, whaling boats are made entirely of wood, wooden pegs are used instead of nails. The sail made of palm leaves. Before whaling season from 2 May until the end of September, it must be opened with some stage of rites. The first is Tobu Nama Fata Ceremony (ceremony of Lamalera people are gathering together for public dialogue, starting with the evaluation of the fishing activity that of years ago until needed preparations for the year around fishing and over this ceremony, the mutually apologize each other.

They believe when they don’t to totally appologize each other. It will damage the sailing activity especially the moment of whale hunting. Desa Lamalera memiliki keunikan/daya tarik berupa budaya berburu mamalia paus dengan peralatan tradisional seperti peledang (perahu layar tanpa mesin), tempuling (tombak bambu yang ujungnya berkait terbuat dari besi) yang dipergunakan untuk menikam paus.

Sebelum berburu didahului dengan seremonial adat Tobo Nama Fata (ritus penyelesaian masalah suku dan tuan tanah sebelum berburu paus), ritus Ie Gerek di batu paus oleh tuan tanah Suku Langowujo yang dilakukan pada tanggal 29 April setiap tahun. Dan pada tanggal 01 Mei setiap tahun dilanjutkan dengan Misa Leva dengan tradisi agama katolik untuk memohon restu kepada Tuhan atas musim Leva yang akan terjadi mulai Tanggal 02 Mei s/d 30 September setiap tahun.

Wisatawan yang berkunjung dapat menyaksikan seluruh rangkaian upacara adat tersebut, melihat peralatan tradisional perburuan paus di kompleks rumah peledang, dan suguhan paket atraksi wisata budaya tetap oleh masyarakat lokal serta kehidupan masyarakat lokal yang unik.

Apabila perjalanan dilakukan dari Lewoleba menuju ke Desa Lamalera menggunakan transportasi umum (publik transport), maka berangkat pada jam 12.00 siang di terminal Waikomo sebelah barat kota Lewoleba. Perjalanan ditempuh selama 4 jam. Jika ingin menginap di Desa Lamalera maka tersedia homestay (Felmina Homestay, Ben Homestay atau Maria Homestay). Makanan dan minuman lokal tersedia di homestay.
